Calling all Learmonths
If you are a Learmonth, or a Learmounth, or a Learmont and did you know that you might be related to one of Russia’s most famous poets?
A conference to be held in Moffat on the 4th-5th October will celebrate the life, work and bicentenary of Mikhail Lermontov at which there will be a particular emphasis on his Scottish ancestry as his forebears left the Borders in the 17th Century to seek their fortune as mercenaries in Eastern Europe.
Moffat Book Events, the conference organisers, have recognised that many Scottish Learmonths may not know of this connection and consequently have arranged two introductory sessions;
A Genealogy event for Learmonths and a Beginners introduction to Lermontov
Speakers include eminent academics, writers and poets from all over the world with a large delegation of Russians from many of the main Moscow cultural institutions.

Note: You may remember that Rex Learmonth and a group of namesakes came to Maxton to investigate the graves of their ancestors in Maxton and Mertoun graveyards, and a statue is to be unveiled in Earlston in October.
