Maxton met Richard and Bláthnaid Smart.
There was a good audience for this illustrated talk by Richard and Bláthnaid Smart about their experience as VSO teachers in the upper west region of Ghana.
They gave a vivid and colourful picture of a country of many contrasts and described the challenges and the rewards of their time in a rural community where there was very little provision for education.
Since their return to teaching in the Borders, Richard and Bláthnaid have set up a charity ‘Friends of Mangu’ which works in partnership with the local community where they worked.
The charity has been able to fund the building of a school and fundraising continues to support what is an ongoing project.
A ‘twinning’ has also been established between Earlston High School and Mangu Junior Secondary School and young people from the Borders have been able to travel to Ghana and spend time as volunteers with the project.
A display of crafts and products from Ghana complemented what was a very inspiring talk.
