Maxton Parish Noticeboard

Over the last few days there have been several suspicious incidents in the Borders area, particularly in and around Galashiels and Melrose, involving suspected bogus callers/scams.

Two of these incidents have involved people ‘cold calling’ at doors on the pretext of collecting for different organisations. Callers will/ should have some form of identification (ID) from their organisation, if you are unsure, ask to see their ID, do not open your door to them until you are sure it is safe. On no account should you let someone into your house until you are absolutely sure it is safe to do so.

Do not give anyone calling at your door or telephoning you, your bank details and do not set up direct debits with anyone you have just met for the first time. Check them out first.

Another suspicious incident involves someone telephoning saying they are going to be in your area carrying out Crime Prevention visits. Be aware that this is not Lothian and Borders Police and that we only carry out crime prevention visits when we have been specifically asked to do so.

Remember, Bogus callers will stop at nothing and are coming up with all sorts of ideas to get you to part with either your money or your bank details so they can get to your money without you even knowing.

Report anything suspicious to either your local Police Station or to Hawick Police Station on 01450 375051.
