Telephone Scam

Message sent by
Kirsty Neish (Police Scotland, Constable, Scottish Borders)

A male with a foreign accent has been calling households in the Scottish Borders claiming to be from the ‘Justice Department’. When challenged the male did not provide a professional response. On researching the London based number it would appear that a number of people have been receiving calls and are being asked to send a cheque in order that they receive a tax refund.

Please be aware of any cold calls on the telephone, if it seems to good to be true it probably is. Legitimate companies will not cold call you and ask you to send them money. Do not provide personal or banking details to cold callers and do not send cheques in order to receive a refund or claim a prize.

If you believe that you have been a victim or fraud you can report online at http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/news or by telephone on 0300 1232040 or contact Police Scotland on 101.
